About

Hi! I’m Katherine Xue.

I study microbial ecology and evolution as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, and I’m starting as an assistant professor at UC Irvine in April 2025 (learn more about my lab here). I investigate the ecological forces and microbial interactions that shape colonization in the human gut microbiome by combining human studies and high-throughput, in vitro experiments. In my PhD, I studied influenza evolution at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. I have also written about science for The New Yorker, Harvard Magazine, and The Conversation.
